Notes & Combos

We reached KoG once again this season with our ever-faithful companion, Dark Magician!

This season definitely belongs to the Kaijus, and DM is actually a very solid matchup against them. I was originally running D.D. Crow and Droll & Lock Bird, but once I hit Legend 3, I decided to test Nibiru, the Primal Being, and I really liked the synergy.

Going first, I usually have 2 different lines of play. If I open with The Eye of Timaeus alongside Magician’s Rod, or a searcher like Illusion of Chaos, Preparation of Rites, or even one of the combo pieces, I go for the main combo line. The standard play uses Illusion Magic together with The Dark Magicians and Magician Navigation, summoning DM and Apprentice Illusion Magician. With Magician’s Salvation, I can bring out Dark Magician Girl and make Evolzar Lars.

That lets me end on Lars’ negate, a Spell/Trap negate, I:P Masquerena to summon Underworld Goddess of the Closed World or Knightmare Unicorn, plus DM on the field. During the combo, I usually go through more than half the Deck, which gives Soul Servant a much higher chance of drawing into impactful cards like Dark Magical Circle or Secrets of Dark Magic. Since Lars is a Dragon, we can also summon Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon during the opponent’s turn. Other strong draws include Forbidden Droplet and Nibiru.

If I don’t have access to the main combo pieces, I simply try to establish either Magician’s Salvation or Eternal Soul and pass with Dragoon instead.
