This KC Cup took place from 05:00 Friday 13th April to 05:00 Monday 15th April (GMT).
- The skill Grit saw heavy use this KC Cup as a means to counter the OTK nature of the current meta decks: Sylvans, Masked Heroes, Geargias and Cyber Angels. Konami hasn’t been transparent regarding in what circumstances the skill will activate but some players in the community have done some testing, here’s what they say:
Jadehex - Farm Expert:
- There is roughly an 85% success rate surviving turns 1-3 with Grit however data is still being collected.
- I did some testing games with Grit however my sample size isn’t large enough to clearly say there is a correlation. I exclusively tested LP and not turns so I cant say much about that. However, the results still show that the lower your LP the less likely Grit is to activate. Grit activation vs. Grit non-activation was 1-9 at 1000 or less LP. The one time it activated I was at 300 LP which is very low so it seems if it can activate while I’m at 300 LP it might as well activate when I’m at 1 LP although it didn’t in 21 Grit activations for me, it seems to be very unlikely. At 1000-2000 LP I was at 9-20, this shows that the chance for Grit to activate significantly decreases in this area which I think is insane. At 2000-3000 LP it seemed to be 50-50 being at a score of 11-11. This is still interesting to see how much it actually decreases from the what, 80%(?) it has at 4000 LP. I tested against Legendary Duelists so I only got OTK’d once and it did trigger then.

I used Restart Masked Heroes mostly until 30K, then I played Restart Sylvans to 45K. That’s when the Grit meme started, so I tried Grit Sylvans myself and thought about Hazy FLame to counter it till 60K. Then I used Grit Cyber Angels to 70K to top 4 global!

Used Geargias until about 25K when it was mainly a lot of Masked Heroes. Switched to Sylvans afterwards until I got to about 45K, and then switched to good old reliable Cyber Angels when I realized everyone was on that Grit Sylvans hype. Ended at 56K and 4th NA

Pretty standard Masked Heroes deck got me to 49K. Along the way I tried other decks for 5-10 duels like Geargias/Sylvans but they did not do as well so I switched back to Masked Heroes. I then started seeing 90% Grit Sylvans and it brought me down to 47K. I played the rest of my games with a non-traditional Hazy Flame build that slayed Sylvans to got me to a secure 52K. The secret to the Hazy build is to get a 2800 ATK or higher Hazy Flame monster, usually using Hazy Flame Cerbereus + Beast Rising + Swamp Mirrorer. Sylvans can’t do anything after that. Outside of Sylvans, few decks can deal with a boosted Hazy Flame monster unless they run special techs, and most did not so I still took games from Masked Heroes and Geargias every so often. The key to the Geargias matchup is if you’re going first and you see Balance, Restart for Paleozoic Canadia. I’d say I had about an 11/15 winrate vs Sylvans with this. As for Restart, it was more relevant than Aroma Strategy because a good hand is more important than getting a Hazy call right everytime. You can usually guess what it will be based on the contents of your hand (more Monsters in hand call Trap, more Traps call Monster but of course have Monster in your Graveyard/hand if you’re gonna call Trap) you’re only running Monsters and Traps (no Spells) to make this easier. Also Hazy Flame Sphynx’s effect is not ideal to use when Sylvans have a non-chainable card set because it’s probably Ultimate Providence.

These are the decks I used:
Global Rank: 61
Regional Rank (Asia): 7
Global Rank: 65
Regional Rank (Latin America): 7
I played Fishes for the entirety of Friday, and played Red-Eyes Zombies to place 7th Latin America in the end. I ran Snipe Hunter and Forbidden Chalice to ensure my matchups against Sylvans were in my favor. Check out my YouTube for more information about the Deck.
Global Rank: 66
Regional Rank (Europe): 7
0-40K with Masked Heroes
I used Bacon Saver before but I took it out and replaced it with Destiny Draw when I added a Destiny HERO - Decider.
40-50K with Sylvans
I changed between Divine Wrath and Different Dimension Ground.
50-52K with Magnets
I lost 20k at one point but came back and finished at over 52K.
Global Rank: 72
Regional Rank (Europe): 9
I used Masked Heroes from 0-45K, dropped down to 32K because of anti Masked Heroes decks or techs (like 2 or 3 Mirror Wall in different decks) and then Grit Sylvans from 32-52K. Also I changed to Hey, Trunade! sometimes. But it didnt help vs Mirror Walls.
Global Rank: 75
Regional Rank (Europe): 10
The first two decks I used for my climb and my 3 last wins were with this last deck.
Global Rank: 84
Regional Rank (Latin America): 9
I alternated between these two decks during the cup, depending on what I was facing. The Geargia deck evolved a lot though, I used cards like Desert Sunlight, Hallowed Life Barrier etc, but that is the build I ended with. Shout out to my bro from another mom, he’s the best!
Global Rank: 94
Regional Rank (Latin America): 10
About as standard as you can get, except for one little deciding factor: Grit. Amazing skill for this deck, gives it a chance to come back vs Masked Heroes and to survive even with bad starting hands. I played this from 0-51K, at the beginning I ran -1 Enemy Controller +1 Sylvan Lotuswain but it was really only useful in the Geargia matchup where it can mill like 60 billion cards per turn, so I took it out.

Regional Rank (North America): 9
Played this from 8K to 51K.
