Top Player Council Thoughts

With the latest Box Burning Nova now two full weeks past release, only Batterymen have really made any impact on the meta. Fur Hires have unsurprisingly held on to their role as the powerhouse deck of the format, with Amazoness, Spellbooks, Masked Heroes, and Batterymen as the only other decks able to keep up.

Tier 0

Fur Hires have remained in Tier 0. Their continued competitive dominance, even in the new two-deck format, has kept them at the peak of the tier list.

TPC Comments:

Mistilteinn – Nothing has changed in the format. Fur Hires are still undeniably the best deck overall.

AndyTsang – Amazoness, Heroes, Spellbooks, Fur Hires. Long ago, these four deck-types lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the Furries attacked. Only Sylvans, master of all card games could stop them. But when the world needed them most, Konami banned them into oblivion.

Tier 1

Tier 1 has remained empty for the same reason as last week: With nearly every tournament-winning/topping player using a Fur Hire deck, there’s less room for other decks to come out on top.

Tier 2

Amazoness and Masked Heroes have similarly remained in place as two great decks held down by the dominance of Fur Hires. Masked Heroes in particular have begun to fall off, however, and will need to start performing in the new two-deck format to stay relevant. Spellbooks meanwhile have been promoted back up to Tier 2, thriving in the two-deck format as a nice complement to Fur Hires. Spellbooks can also steal games from Fur Hires if they go first or if the Fur Hire player doesn’t have the resources to deal with Silent Magician LV8.

TPC Comments:

MiguelJoker – Silent Magician Spellbooks, to me, are the best counter for Fur Hires because they will generally need Treacherous Trap Hole to win this match-up. Amazoness drawing well can beat Fur Hires too.

Stevie – A shift in the format has made Heroes much weaker. Without a strong Book or Fur Hire matchup, the deck struggles to find its place at the top.

BlackJesus – Spellbooks have made the jump to Tier 2 thanks to their solid Fur Hire match-up and the change of format, which was predicted by the TPC weeks ago. Being able to counter Hey, Trunade! and disrupt a summon is everything a Fur Hire player fears. Also, having a 3500 ATK + Spell-immune monster on the field is a wall that is impossible for Fur Hire decks to breach even with triple Beatdown. Masked Heroes do indeed get dominated by Fur Hires more often than not and do not have a great match-up against Amazoness, but if the uptick in popularity for Spellbooks continues then expect swift OTKs again from Masked Heroes. Heroes have many options to swarm and have always been a threat to Spellbooks (especially with direct attacks), despite Silent Magician negations (and having multiple spells makes those negations easy to bait out). Amazoness has a shaky match-up against Fur Hire so I do not believe they can be in the same Tier as Furs, but having the best engine and counter-techs against both Spellbooks and Heroes almost puts this deck into a league of its own when it comes to every other deck.

Tier 3

Batterymen have remained in Tier 3. Optimal builds have trended towards 3x Sphere Kuriboh to help surive the early game against Fur Hires and have seen success in tournaments despite the deck’s inaccessibility. Without a strong start, however, Batterymen can definitely fall prey to a well-timed Dyna, Hero Fur Hire banish or lose all their Batterymen to Amazoness Onslaught. But the strong core, in combination with the speed of the deck, shows a lot of promise competitively and certainly makes Batterymen a deck to keep your eye on over the next few weeks.

TPC Comment:

AndyTsang – Batterymen have proven to deserve a place on the list. However, they will need to further prove themselves to stand anywhere above Tier 3.

Gem-Knights have been removed from High Potential. While the explosive plays off a Turn 1 That Grass Looks Greener are extremely fun and powerful, Gem-Knights struggle seriously with consistency, near auto-losing without Grass or Gem-Knight Fusion.
