Tier List Update - December 18

Top Player Council Thoughts

A week out from the release of Secrets of the Ancients, Junk Synchron and Armades, Keeper of Boundaries have made quite the impact in Control decks, being used in the winning decks of two major community tournaments (DLPT 20 and All Stars #3). The changes in this week’s Tier List update are largely centered on this influence from Junk + Armades.

Tier 1

Control has been promoted to Tier 1. Already a strong deck when played passively, the more aggressive options in Breaker the Magical Warrior and Armades, Keeper of Boundaries give the deck new depth. Multiple iterations of this deck have been successful recently, with Eugen Heidt winning a tournament using Endless Trap Hell and Man-Eater Bug with Junk Synchron to make Armades, while zzmondo won another with What Grows in the Graveyard as the Armades-facilitator.

Vampires have remained in Tier 1 but performed poorly this week. Struggling a bit when all the attention was on them, it will be interesting to see how Vampires change after being joined in Tier 1. Does Bandit become the go-to skill over Sealed Tombs? Does Hey, Trunade! start to replace Enemy Controller?

With every passing tournament, Control further establishes its position as a dominating deck. It has multiple powerful Trap cards at its disposal, with monsters boasting the ability to gradually pick away at opposing resources. Junk Synchron has quickly picked up popularity due to being able to tutor out Armades, Keeper of Boundaries - a very useful tool in the mirror match.

Armades is arguably the best monster in the game.

Tier 2

Masked Heroes have remained in Tier 2. Their worst counter and best match-up are both in Tier 1, so siding hard against Control is necessary for up-to-date Hero decks.

TPC Comments:

Luke Tyler:

Though Heroes have a favourable Vampire matchup, they struggle against Control. If the elements of Banish Control weren’t enough, Destiny HERO - Decider cannot ward off Armades, Keeper of Boundaries either. Though top cut spots are still expected to contain Hero decks, it is not anticipated that Heroes will win a large-scale tournament as long as Control remains a dominant deck.

Masked HERO Anki is arguably the second-best monster in the game.

Tier 3

Blue-Eyes has been demoted to Tier 3 following a lacking week in terms of representation. The potential explosiveness, especially against slower decks like Control, is a strong point but the Vampire match-up remains a serious weakness until cards like Magic Deflector are sided in. Blue-Eyes may be a deck to keep an eye on as the meta adjusts around Tier 1 Control.

TPC Comments:

Luke Tyler:

Blue-Eyes has a decent match-up against Control because of the ability to constantly apply pressure using large monsters while picking apart backrow in the process. The deck is still a threat to top contenders, and its current position on the tier list is simply a reflection of its recent tournament placings.

Blue-Eyes falls to Tier 3 because of a continual decrease in play in most major events. The deck still does decently against the higher tiered decks, but not well enough to expect many tournament tops from it. Fur Hires hang in at Tier 3 thanks to the way that cards like Wiz, Sage Fur Hire and Double Magical Arm Bind can act as decent counters to Control while still having somewhat winnable matchups against the other higher tiered decks. Buster Blader remains in Tier 3 due to its oppressive fusion monsters and access to an “Exodia” combo. U.A. still stays strong in Tier 3 thanks to access to U.A. Mighty Slugger, which acts as a powerful counter to Control and can still swing through most of the meta when successfully summoned.

Bujins and Gemini have been removed from the Tier List. Bujins especially struggle against Control, unable to do anything against Armades without a Paleozoic Canadia or Offerings to the Doomed to remove it. Gemini overall has very little representation despite some major strong performances, and functions similarly to pure Control (although more actively disruptive) by which it is outclassed.

This week we have the Meta Weekly on 12/18 at 2:30pm EST and other community events throughout the week. Expect the results of these events to have a strong influence on the Tier List.
