Meta Weekly 181 Champion Spotlight - grucius

Overview

In case you missed it, this week’s Meta Weekly was the first Weekly with the new Rise of Gaia Structure Deck. While it was unsure just how strong Gaia truly is as a deck, especially with people aware of it, it definitely made a splash on the day, performing the second best in Top 32 and even taking the Finals when Grucius stopped AdoboBoy’s two-week streak.

Interview with grucius

How does it feel to play with Gaia in this meta?

The deck is really fun, not sure how far it can go. Now, as always is the case with new decks, it has the surprise factor and people don’t know 100% how to play against the deck.

How did the day go for you? Any notable matchups?

It was a really fun day and, to be honest, I got lucky in some games in Top Cut, like against Onomat in Top 4, As for match-ups, the Finals match was especially cool.

Would you like to explain any of your Deck choices?

I think the Main Deck is pretty standard outside of a few things. Initially I wanted to play 20 cards with two Mystical Space Typhoon in the Side Deck, but I wasn’t able to find space in the Side, so I ended up maining 1 copy of MST. I played 1 Dragon’s Mirror mainly because I didn’t have time to test at all (I wasn’t home until 20 minutes before start time) and I wasn’t sure about how good it was (I would consider playing 2 now). The 1 Concentrating Current was mainly to have some fun tech and also having an out to Obelisk the Tormentor / Lunalight Sabre Dancer in the Main Deck, it also won me some cool games.

As for the Side Deck, Necrovalley was a really strong card against Resonators, it helped me win so many games.

Do you have anything else you’d like to say about your Tournament Experience?

It was very fun, would’ve never expected to win it since I didn’t have time to test in the past few days as I was tied up with real-life stuff

Lastly, do you have any shout-outs you’d like to make?

Shout-outs to B&P for rooting for me in finals. Congrats to Luke Tyler who ended Top 4 with the deck as well, and huge shout-outs to Snyffus to chill with me as always and who, after seeing my list with Concentrating Current, immediately said that I was going to win the Weekly
