MCS XLI Champion Spotlight - TRoweses

Overview

In case you missed it, this week’s Meta Championship Series was the first large-scale KC Cup-style tournament with the Sign of Harpies Mini BOX. As such, we had F.A. Star Seraph Darklords as target number one, with most of Swiss either running the deck itself or a lot of hate for the matchup. The finals, however, were between a Star Seraph Darklord deck without F.A. and a Heavily anti-F.A. Ritual Beast Deck, with TRoweses taking the championship!

Interview with TRoweses

How do does it feel to win the Meta Championship Series?

Feels like I just won a YCS, which is awesome! This was a big goal of mine, so I’m happy to reach it so soon - to be honest I’m just feeling really lucky lol

Anything you’d like to tell us about yourself?

I have been playing Yugioh since I was six years old. It was my escape from everything wrong in my childhood. After getting second at US nationals and winning an ARG 25k CS the only thing left was to do well in worlds. That was a five-round tournament that I didn’t Top, and after losing that I felt so defeated because it just didn’t seem competitive enough for an international tournament: the best of the best only to play 5 measly rounds?

I haven’t really been to involved in the TCG since then (2016), but a few months ago my friend, and co-leader of our team X-0, Gabe got me into Duel Links. I fell in love because it is so hard to cheat! I feel the 180-second timer gives it some flavor, and the fact that its online - there’s no way to cheat, or at least it’s a lot more difficult! Duel Links kinda feels like old yugioh with the way Traps function in decks right now too, so it’s very nostalgic.

What was your thought process going into this no-Side MCS?

My thought process was, I didn’t want to play F.A’s because I felt like they changed the Star Seraph Darklord deck into a stun deck. What I love about the deck is all the cards it pluses, when you put in a floodgate monster with Forbidden Lance (something I consider relatively bad in the deck because it’s not defensive enough) your deck just seems gimmicky. I only like to play stun decks if I think it’s a really strong meta call, but with the Meta Weekly win there was no way I could believe that going into this tournament. Blue-Eyes were getting countered, and I didn’t have the cards for Harpies with Book of Moons (which I felt was really strong), so og Star Seraph Darklords with defensive cards seemed like the best choice!

How did the day go for you? Any notable matchups?

I lost Round 1, which I feel benefitted me because I got a lot of favorable match ups after that. Two Star Seraph Dark Magicians and two Water Xyzs in Swiss, with some Blue-Eyes sprinkled in. Then Top 32 had no mirrors: only two Blue-Eyes, Fire King, and Onomat. My deck being so good in general since it wasn’t necessarily teched for one match-up is what carried me when playing against such a diverse pool of decks

Would you like to explain any of your Deck choices?

You need Number 32: Shark Drake if you play Book of Moon, because it really helps OTK if you stop the Sage with Eyes of Blue + Ancient Rules / Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon you can attack the Sage twice. Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon got me lethal one time in Top 32 against Blue-Eyes. As far as the main you see your whole deck a lot so I don’t think playing the same copies of Traps is too necessary, the different options seem better, especially considering Destiny Draw. Karma Cut is a real thing but running more than 1 just seemed too neg.

Lastly, Do you have any shout-outs you’d like to make?

I want to thank my team X-0 especially: I feel like we’ve really been killing it. More personally, want to shout out That’s Game Gabe, Lordy, Stakks, Wowerer, Zenith, and Dave for all the support and help they’ve given me!
