This is the 18th Main Box and was released on February 19th, 2019. Absolute Inferno contains support for Fire Fist and Nephthys as well as the new Laval decktype.
Red Dragon Archfiend/Vice Dragon: I think these 2 would synergize best together with Resonators and A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon to wipe ur opponent backrow then synchro RDA but its probably just a fun deck probably not competitive. RDA can be used in Karakuris with cards like Curse of Anubis/Windstorm of Etaqua but there are better synchros to run
Chaos King Archfiend: Its a decent synchro but the lack of good fiend tuners makes it pretty irrelevant at the moment
Dark bribe: A double edged sword, great card to push for game against things like Buster Blader but giving your opponent a draw is quite risky if they survive your push. Can probably see play in Heroes/Karakuris
Fire fists: They got some support this box but they really need Fire Formation - Tenki to become relevant which also would help other decks with Beast Warriors
Nephthys :The only deck with good potential from new box. One variant is just Yubel+Phoenix but with cards like Disciple of Nephthys over Fire Kings to turbo Yubel/Phoenix faster, main issue is Yubel not being searchable and Koa'kis not caring. The ritual versions main issue is lacking defence and gets easily shut down going 2nd
Skill Prisoner: Very niche card, probably not gonna see much use except for maybe Ancient Gearss due to their weakness to Koa'kis or Buster Blader to protect their DNA Surgery(which Mana Dragon Zirnitron does better)
Bad Aim: Side deck card, can be a replacement for Unending Nightmare vs Karakuris/Buster Blader/Vampires
Lavals: Decent synchro deck but not gonna be competitive most likely due to a weak boss monster and them needing setup to destroy cards which feels too slow in the current meta.
Genex: Bad support to a bad deck, probably the worst SRs in new box.
So overall there are 2-3 good backrow cards in certain decks and Nephyths have potential. We just need to see if a banlist can slow the meta down to make it easier for them getting to turn 3, pretty bad box for a new player but has some good-potential traps if ur an old player.
This entire review will assume one or a few of the top decks/staples will be nerfed. Otherwise my opinion of the box is that it is an AWFUL investment.
Red Dragon Archfiend: Synchros are currently heavily oppressed by common backrow; Paleozoic Canadia and Floodgate Trap Hole. Unlike Burei or Stardust it lacks ANY form of utility to extend/assist your plays. But hey if you really want that Anti-Gusto tech...
Dark Bribe: Possibly the strongest card in this box, though I am heavily biased from the TCG. Duel links is not the TCG. But despite that I believe Dark Bribe will see play. The advantage of negating a key card and your opponent (almost always) being unable to chain a card to it has proven time and time again to be powerful.
Nephthys: Very scary and bricky looking archetype; Rituals in a nutshell. The potential synergy with Yubel is intriguing but I don't see a pure list or hybrid being better one way or another. Especially in consistency.
Fire Fist: About the same level of support that Mecha Phantom Beasts got. They also share a claustrophobic conundrum with Duel links limited board size. Difference being that MPB found competitive viability through obscene synergy with Needle Ceiling and Enemy Controller. I'm 100% sure Fire Fist will not find that kind of success.
Living Fossil: Mid-late game tool for synchro/fusion/tribute fodder. And the occasional ~800atk beater lmao. It will be a much better card going forward with stronger synchro's and eventually XYZ's.
Vice Dragon: Is not Cyber Dragon. Good for Synchro plays. Synchro plays not good.
Laval: Setting up GY with this decks engine will be slow as hell. No GY, no options. No good in OTK meta. I think this deck will almost always use Grass to tap into it's explosive potential faster. Grass decks are not reliable.
Bad Aim: As long as you didn't get Trunaded or Koa'kucked, this could do decent work.
The rest of the box is garbage or not worth talking about.
First: Living Fossil, as an extender, a good card. Might see play in Vampires to quickly otk, summon an extra Samurai Skull for the otk. I don’t know if it is even needed. In Buster Blader special summon a card to fuse with, then go into Buster Blader or Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman. In Karakuri, as an extender to gain more more advantage for additional Synchro summons. Could also be used in Heroes, for an extra monster extender.
Second: The never dying Amazoness got a card to protect Amazoness Onslaught lol. But in a more meta perspective, Buster Blader got more protection against Cosmic Cyclone in the card Skill Prisoner, but this only makes the combo better, it doesn’t make it more consistent. Might play as a one of, but the risk is losing protection in Paleozoic Canadia.
Third: I am confused of the new decks, more than wowed. Fire Fist, is this enough to make them good, or are they still reliant on Canadia. Laval, What? They Synchro Summon, only heard of Laval Chain. The Nephys deck seems interesting, but I don’t know if the combos are doing enough things..
I am confident in Nephthys being High Potential to say the least, as it has received great support in this box
There are many variants to discuss, such as Yubel, Gusto, Silent Magician, or just a Ritual focused deck
Yubel is the one that catches my eye the most as you can combo well with the Lv2 Nephthys monsters and Yubel's board wipe effect to reliably get the Yubel Phoenix lock by turn 5 You are also able to constantly use Last Hope of Nephthys through Matriarch and Chronicler recycling, which improves the Yubel strat as it allows you to attack in every battle phase rather than wait for Terror Incarnate to clear their monster zone for a few Phoenix attacks
Treat the Nephthys monsters as if they're a turn 1 Yubel Barong play, you start to + overtime but instead of having Fire King Island as a liability, your opponent has to find a way to out Yubel
Nephthys is a pretty F2P deck, you only really need 1 Cerulean and 1 Devotee as Chronicler can recycle them and Matriarch can recycle Chronicler
The rest are R's and N's, I doubt you would be hurting your gem bank if you were to just go for those cards
My advise is to wait and see what this deck can do in Duel Links where skills can turn the tides rather than testing on DuelingBook and YGOPRO only to jump to conclusions early
Vice Dragon has great potential to make Synchro-Summoning easier for a level 8. Turn 2, this card plus a Junk Synchron is easily going to give you Red Dragon Archfiend, Angel of Zera, Stardust Dragon or any level 8 generic tuner.
General Overview: This set has nothing that pops out at first glance, or second glance for that matter. The meta that we currently have has strong OTKs powered by Koa'ki and Vampires, unmatched advantage in the hands of Karakuri, and a unbreakable board brought by Buster. The new support for old decks in this set can not compete with the current top tier and ill describe why.
Fire Fist: This deck probably has the most potential out of everything I see in terms of current and future support. The glaring omission of Fire Formation - Tenki means that this won’t be a consistent deck but it still has some tricks of its sleeve. Most notably we got the TCG “3-Axis engine” which consists of Raven searching for Tensu allowing a second normal summon, which ideally will be the new UR Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Spirit synchro summoning for the SR Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Horse Prince who can then special summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Rooster from the deck, who searches a Fire Fist monster from the deck. This is a 2 card combo that gives you a +1 in card economy with the set card from Rooster. You can potentially cycle another Fire Formation card you have with Roosters second effect into another. A good card to search off Rooster in the new Fire Formation - Yoko who can destroy a card on the field. With Beatdown you can otk exactly using Horse and Rooster through a Hey, Trunade! play if they control a single monster. The Fire Formation traps will be needed to protect yourself if you go turn 1 with this combo.
